Obituary for William D. Carver

January 15, 1927 - August 19, 2017
Gloucester, Massachusetts | Age 90

William "Pop" D. Carver, 90, of Gloucester, Massachusetts, passed away suddenly and peacefully, Saturday, August 19, 2017.

William was born January 15, 1927 in New York, NY to James and Ann (Smith) Carver. He spent 20 years in the Navy serving in the Pacific during WWII and in various locations at sea and at bases throughout the Korean and early Vietnam wars. He worked as a Black Seal Engineer in Des Moines, Iowa before retiring and moving in with his family in New Jersey. He was a member of the VFW in Iowa where he was Chaplain and Historian for his Post.

He was a fixture at the Main Street Café in Toms River, New Jersey from 1995-2005. Many classes of South Toms River High School students saw him every day at Table "8" where he read the paper and held counsel. He was a sometimes gruff retired navy man, but when the Santa for the Manasquan St. Denis School Christmas Party couldn't make it one year, Pop reluctantly filled in and ended up being Santa for many years until the last of his grandsons graduated from the school. He genuinely loved all the kids and knew most by name. Some came to see him like a surrogate grandpa. Later he moved with his family in 2012 to Gloucester to be involved on a daily basis in his new great-granddaughter's life.

William is survived by and will be dearly missed by his daughter Valerie, son-in-law and best friend Matthew, treasured grandsons Matt, Steve, Shawn and son-in-law Ed, beloved great-granddaughter Carolyn Rose – who was his greatest joy in the last 6 years of his life, and her mother Anna who he loved like a granddaughter. Great and beloved friends include Kate and Jeff, Dani and Dave, Sabrina and John, and all those who he proudly watched grow from teenagers into responsible adults he met from all walks of life everywhere he went.

In honoring with William's wishes Funeral Services will be private.
