Obituary for Walter W. Fredrick

November 6, 1927 - December 17, 2016
Gloucester, Massachusetts | Age 89

Walter Warren Fredrick, 89, of Gloucester died peacefully at Addison Gilbert Hospital on December 17. Walter was born on November 6, 1927. He grew up in Burlington MA where he met his wife of 67 years, Lila, the love of his life. He was a graduate of Burlington High School and Northeastern University. While living in Burlington he was a member of the Volunteer fire department and enjoyed his time in the fire barn.

Walter served on the destroyer USS Compton (DD 705) during and after World War II. He loved the sailing and the sea from his boyhood. He was a crew member on the schooner Pleone out of Marblehead, the time of which held special memories for him. He was also Captain or crew on a number of ships, motor and sail. He spent many hours teaching others to sail.

He moved to Gloucester in 1960 while building his business, Walter W. Fredrick Assoc., which sold drafting and engineering equipment throughout the New England States. The business was a longtime fixture first in Lanesville and later on lower Washington Street. He was one of the original members of Gloucester's Industrial Development Commission and was instrumental in bringing the Blackburn Industrial Park into existence.

Walter loved singing and playing his guitar for his children and grandchildren, bringing gales of laughter with his rendition of Little Brown Jug. He was a firm believer in the theory of "pie for breakfast," and enjoyed warm afternoons admiring the sights on Wingaersheek Beach from the telescope mounted on his deck. During his younger days Walter was a longtime member of the YMCA, The Manchester Athletic Club and the Annisquam Yacht Club.

Walter is survived by his wife Lila (Dupee), his son, Walter D. Fredrick of Lanesville, his daughter Lila Bareford and her husband David of Stonington, CT, his grandchildren Matthew C. Fredrick and Warren D. Fredrick, both of Gloucester, Skylar Bareford of Stonington CT and Julia Fredrick of Boise ID.

Walter was predeceased by his sons Matthew D. Fredrick and Andrew N. Fredrick.

We would like to thank the staff of Addison Gilbert Hospital Steele 1, the Emergency room staff and the many physicians who took care of him during his many years in Gloucester and the staff of Partners at Home Healthcare.

Walter's Memorial visitation will be held at the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St. Gloucester on Thursday, December 22, 2016 from 2-4 PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mount Adnah Cemetery, 7 Revere St., Gloucester MA. 01930.
