Obituary

Victoria May (Burnham) Allen, 99, of Gloucester, Massachusetts, passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2017. Victoria was a resident of Seacoast Nursing Home for three and a half years.

Victoria "Vicki" was born December 3, 1917 in Essex, daughter of the late John Lee and Elise Chase Burnham. She attended schools in Essex, graduating from Essex High School in 1934, and then attended Salem Teachers College, from which she graduated in 1937.

She taught at Rufus Choate School in Essex and, under the guidance of her Aunt Mabel Burnham, Victoria went to New York and taught at The Ethical Culture School. While in New York she had many enjoyable experiences: libraries, museums, and attending the World's Fair. After sometime, as Victoria was a home town girl she returned to Essex. She married George Allen of Essex, and had three children. In 1956, she and her children moved to Gloucester.

Vicki was a member of the former United Methodist Church in Essex.

She was predeceased by her son Stephen E. Allen, grandson Stephen Allen, her three brothers Russell, Newell and Clarence Burnham, as well as, her three sisters Evelyn Stewart, Marjorie Rideout and Gretta Foster.

She is survived by her son John G. Allen and his wife Elizabeth of Ipswich, her daughter, Ruth E, Katsikas of Gloucester and her four grandchildren Corina Johnsen and her husband Rick of Gloucester, Marie Barry of Rockport, Petrina Butler and her husband Kevin of Southampton, England and Colette Katsikas of Northampton, MA. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Nathan Frost, Nicole Frost, Brittney Barry, Lisa Barry, Brandon Barry, Jade Barry and Willow Butler. Her step grandchildren Christina and Rikki Johnsen; her great great grandchildren Riley and Layla Pavinsky, Christopher and Sean Todd and step great great Athena Johnsen and Leiah Garlick. Vicki is also survived by many nieces and nephews
.
Vicki had a passion for learning and absorbed books and educational programs on a daily basis, the harder the crossword puzzle, the better. Her green thumb filled her yard with multiple flower gardens. She enjoyed the freedom having a car gave her and would visit friends, get out for rides and go on picnics. She had a great love for Essex where she will find her final resting spot with her parents, her siblings and her son.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Gloucester United Methodist Church, 436 Washington St. Gloucester on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
