Deacon Raymond C. Wellbank, 66, of Gloucester passed away unexpectedly on Saturday evening, December 9, 2017 at Addison Gilbert Hospital. He was the loving husband to Patricia A. (Carty) Wellbank with whom he shared 33 years of marriage.

Ray was born October 1, 1951 in Philadelphia, PA. He was the son of the late Raymond J. and Florence (Picciani) Wellbank. Ray resided in Gloucester for the past 2 and a half years. Ray and Patti have treasured their time spent here in Gloucester. He previously resided in Harleysville, PA. Ray graduated from Cardinal O'Hara High School in Philadelphia Class of 1969. He went onto West Chester University where he received his Bachelor's degree in business, Class of 1973. After many years of working, Ray decided to further his education and received his Master's Degree from DeSales University in 1995. A dedicated, passionate catholic gentleman, Ray went to St. Charles Borremeo Seminary in Philadelphia where he received Holy Orders and was ordained a permanent Deacon on June 2, 2007.

Ray worked as a Fiscal Analyst for PHMC a nonprofit for over 12 years until his retirement in 2015. Ray has been serving as a Permanent Deacon for the Catholic Community of Gloucester and Rockport since August 2015. Ray was a 2016 recipient of the Chevrus Award presented to him by Cardinal Sean O'Malley on Nov. 30, 2016. He previously served as a Deacon at St. Stanislaus in Lansdale, PA for 8 years prior to moving to Gloucester.

Ray enjoyed many different adventures in life. He and Patti loved traveling. Ray "enjoyed a good ball game", volunteering at the Shalin Liu Center in Rockport as well as bird watching. He also volunteered with the Rockport Boy Scouts and assisted them with the Catholic ad altare dei Award. Ray was an Eagle Scout and Boy Scout Leader for many years. Ray served as Chaplain of St. Vincent DePaul Society. Of all the great activities Ray participated in his favorite activity of all was spending time with and talking about his cherished grandchildren. He also loved being a Deacon and was always there when someone needed something.

In addition to his loving wife Patti, Ray is survived by his children Rachel A. Ford and her husband Ken of Gloucester, Monica K. Hooper and her husband Todd of Elizabethtown, PA, Michelle A. Vance and her husband Allen of Las Vegas, NV and Philip R. Wellbank of Philadelphia, PA. His sisters Peg Christensen of Swarthmore, PA, Joan Neumann of Flemington, NJ and Kathy Wellbank of Chestnut Hill, PA. His cherished grandchildren Allyson, T.J., Matthew, Evie, Cameron and Presley. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Deacon Wellbank's Rite of Welcoming will be held on Friday, December 15, 2017 at Holy Family Parish in Saint Ann's Church, Prospect St. Gloucester at 3:00 PM. Deacon Wellbank will then lie in state at St. Ann's Church till 7:00 PM followed by evening prayer. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester. In lieu of flowers donation's in Ray's memory may be made to St. Ann Church Restoration Fund 74 Pleasant St. Gloucester, MA 01930.
