Retired Gloucester Firefighter John C. "Jack" Douglass, of Gloucester passed away on Monday morning September 25, 2017 on his 89th birthday in Addison Gilbert Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was the loving husband to Barbara L. (Thompson) Douglass with whom he shared 67 years of marriage.

Jack was born September 25, 1928 in Gloucester. He was the son of the late John C. and Lucy (Walen) Douglass. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and loved living on the ocean. He was a graduate of Gloucester Schools.

Jack served the City of Gloucester with great pride he was appointed a Firefighter on September 14, 1953. He served at both the Headquarters as well as East Gloucester Stations. He retired August 18, 1985 after serving the City of Gloucester for 32 years.

He was a member of the Gloucester Firefighters Association. Jack was an avid golfer, a dedicated sports fan especially the New England Patriots. He also enjoyed reading, listening to Jazz music, fishing and working around his yard he loved to make his property look great.

In addition to his loving wife Barbara, Jack is survived by his two daughters Susan Grier and her husband John H. of Waterboro, ME and Christina Cabral and her husband Gary of Gloucester, his brother Sherman Douglass of Milton, NH, his sister Gillian Robinson of Beverly. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren Douglass J. Grier of Center Harbor, NH, Michael Grier of Meredith, NH, Amy Simmons of Shapleigh, ME, Mary Cabral of Gloucester and Matthew Cabral of Magnolia, his great grandchildren Mikayla Grier, Leah Green and Mia Grier as well as many nieces and nephews.

Jack's Graveside Service will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant Ave Gloucester on Tuesday morning, October 3, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In lieu of flowers donations in Jack's memory may be made to a charity of ones one's choice.
