Obituary for James P. Officer, Sr.

December 12, 1940 - March 3, 2018
Gloucester, Massachusetts | Age 77

Mr. James P. Officer. Sr., 77, of Gloucester passed away on Saturday evening, March 3, 2018 at home with his loving family at his side following a lengthy illness. He was the husband to Joan I. (Dwyer) Officer with whom he would have shared 55 years of marriage this April.

Jim was born December 12, 1940 in Hartford, CT. He is the son of the late Roland and Alice (Dumas) Officer. He resided in Gloucester and Rockport for over the past 50 years. Jim previously lived in Connecticut where he graduated from Wethersfield High School.

Jim was a United States Navy Veteran. After high school, Jim joined the United States Navy serving as SN DK onboard on the Destroyer USS Mitcher DL2 during 1958 through 1962. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Jim met his love of his life, Joanie on a city bus into Hartford.

Jim and Joan married in April 1963 and lived in Connecticut until they moved to Gloucester MA in 1968 where they raised their three children on Wheeler's Point. Jim had several positions in the construction field and worked as the Facilities Chief at National Marine Fisheries Lab where he retired after 17 years. After retirement, Jim worked part-time for friends at Seacoast Golf in NH and later at Golf Day in Danvers.

Jim was a sports enthusiast. He had a passion for many, but his favorites were golf and bowling. He was a former member of Cape Ann Golf where he won seven club championships between 1977 and 1993. His lowest score of 68 from the "blue" tees was at Far Corners in Boxford, MA. He also had two hole-in-ones; one in Exeter, NH and the other at Lakeview golf courses. His knowledge and enthusiasm of the golf game has been passed along to his daughter and grandsons. Jim also enjoyed the game of ten pin bowling. He logged two 300 games and two 299 games in North Reading and continued to play throughout the years. Jim had acquired many good friends with whom he kept in touch. He was known for his outgoing personality and his "Hey There Big Guy" handshake.

In the 1970's Jim volunteered as Cub and Webelo den leader for Troop 56 in Riverdale which both his sons were a part of. He and other volunteers took the boys into Dogtown where they held jamborees, and took camping trips into NH.

Later in life, Jim and his wife Joan enjoyed their many car rides along the New England coast and to Lake George in NY. Jim's last role and one he took great pride in was with his wife Joan, in which they were a tremendous help in picking up their grandsons from preschool and later on, elementary school. Jim loved and was very proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments and would take out photos from his wallet at the mention of them.

In addition to his loving wife Joan, Jim is survived by his three children, James P. Officer , Jr., Philip D. Officer and his wife Dianne and Melissa E Rose and her husband Chris all of Gloucester. His five cherished grandchildren Cameron Officer, Madelyn Officer, Sylvia Officer, Jasper Rose and Wyatt Rose.

In honoring with Jim's wishes there will be no visiting hours. His graveside service will be in Beechbrook Cemetery, West Gloucester at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in Jim's memory can be made to Cape Ann Veteran's Services, C/O Adam Curcuru at Gloucester City Hall, 9 Dale Avenue, Gloucester MA 01930.
