Mrs. Elizabeth (Sherry) "Betty" McCarthy, age 91, a Gloucester resident for more than 45 years passed away at home on Wednesday May 24, 2017. She was the loving wife of the late Justin "Jud" McCarthy the love of her life who she married June 25, 1949.

Betty was born October 31, 1925 and raised in Danvers. She was the daughter of the late Florence (Welch) Sherry and William Sherry. A graduate of Holton High School in Danvers Class of 1942 and went onto to further her studies at Forsyth Dental Hygiene in Boston Class of 1944.

She was employed as a Dental Hygienist for many years working in Danvers and most recently for Dr. Walter Opolski.

Betty enjoyed many hobbies including gardening, boating, swimming in Little River and Bee Keeping. She was a long time member of the Bee Keepers Association of Essex County. She and Jud were very involved at the Topsfield Fair, volunteering making beeswax candles with the visiting children. She and Jud enjoyed dancing on Friday nights at the American Legion and later Monday afternoons at the Rose Baker Senior Center. She also enjoyed bird watching, playing the piano and trips t Maine were also very important to her. Betty was a communicant of St. Ann's Church and a longtime member of St. Vincent DePaul as well as volunteering in the thrift shop. Most recently Betty enjoyed The Rose Baker Senior Center Day By Day Adult Care.

She is survived by her daughter Anne M. Cleveland and her husband Rob of Hope, ME, her son John W. "Jack" McCarthy and his wife Janelle of Gloucester. Her cherished grandchildren Jason McCarthy and his wife Margaret of Amesbury, Sarah Auger and her husband Josh of Manchester, NH, Dory Forgit and her husband Jake of Portland, ME, Justin Cleveland of Portland, ME, Moe Moses of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Renee' Mitchell and her husband Robert of Gloucester. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Kelly, Sarah, Jasper, Julian, Isla, Evelyn, Guss, Nicole, Zachery, Colby, Abbey, Drew, Alex. Her special friend Joseph and many nieces and nephews. Her dear friends Mary Connelly, Marianne "Auna" McGillivary, Holly Amaral, Marjorie Cusick, Kanchana Cusick as well as all her friends at the Senior Day Care and Day by Day.

The family would like to thank all of the staff from Action Inc, Christine Parker of Adult Day Care, Senior Care and Care Dimensions for the wonderful care, love and support shown to Betty and her family.

Betty was predeceased by; her son Dennis McCarthy, sisters Virginia "Wink" Zollo, Barbara DiPolo, and brother James Sherry.

Bettys Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Parish in St. Ann's Church Prospect St. Gloucester on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at 9:30 AM. Visiting hours will be in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St. Gloucester on Wednesday evening May 31, 2017 from 4-7 PM. Interment will be in Annunciation Cemetery, Danvers. In lieu of flowers donations in Betty's memory may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society at Holy Family Parish 60 Prospect St. Gloucester, MA 01930 or the Cape Ann Animal Aid 4 Paws Lane Gloucester, MA 01930.
