Mrs. Elizabeth A. "Betty" (Boughton) Cooney, 92, of Gloucester passed away on Friday, November 10, 2017 at home following a lengthy illness. She was the devoted wife of the late J. Robert Cooney with whom she shared 64 years of marriage.

She was born in Gloucester on November 4, 1925, the daughter of the late Elsie (Hall) and Emerson S. Boughton. She was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and a graduate of Gloucester High School, class of 1943 of which she was on the reunion committee for many years.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. A member of the Gloucester United Methodist Church the former Riverdale Methodist Church and the Evening Circle. She was also a member of the Retired Skippers Squares Dance Club of Gloucester. She is also a member of the Cancer Recovery Group in the 1990's. Betty was a den mother and 4 H leader.

Thru out her life she was employed at Gorins Department Store, the former Linen Thread Co., Gloucester Electric Company, Bob Smith's Travel Agency and the Cape Ann Anchor and Forge.

She is survived by a daughter Christine Lodge and her husband Billy of Groveland, her sons Stephen Cooney and his wife Faye Curcuru of Gloucester and Robert C. Cooney and his companion Ganine Montgomery of Gloucester. Her grandchildren Nathan Lang and his wife Christina of Woodbury Heights, NJ, Torrie Nguyan and her husband Steven of Haverhill, Jonathan Cooney, Brock and Adam Cooney all of Gloucester and Jillian Beba and her husband Ervin of Gloucester. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Ashley, Madison and Taylor Nguyen and Rylee Beba. Her sister Jean Garvey of Gloucester. Her sister-in-law Barbara Kangas and her husband Arthur as well as her former daughter in law Vicki Cooney and many nieces and nephews.

Betty's Memorial Service will be in the Gloucester United Methodist Church, 436 Washington St. Gloucester on December 4, 2017 at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. In honoring with Betty's wishes there will be no visiting hours and burial will be privately held.
