Mr. Charleton J. "Charlie" Herdman, 83, of Leesburg, Florida passed away on Monday, June 26, 2017 in the Kaplan Family Hospice House following a brief illness. He was the loving husband of the late Muriel (Rowley) Herdman with whom he shared 61 years of marriage.

Charlie was born December 23, 1933 in Gloucester. He was the son of the late Charleton J. and Margaret (Rutherford) Herdman. He was a resident of Gloucester for most of his life. He and Muriel lived in Bonfire Park in Leesburg, Florida during the winter months for over 20 years. He was a graduate of Gloucester High School Class of 1951. He received his Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Boston University in 1955 where he also was involved with the ROTC. Charlie received his Master's Degree in education at Salem University in 1962.

He was a United States Army veteran. He was active duty from 1956 to 1958 and then was Active Reserve duty from 1958 to 1980 retired as a Lt.Col. He was a military marksman and received many awards and citations for his shooting.

In 1958 after returning from the service, Charlie began teaching as a classroom teacher at the Manchester Memorial School for many years. He then went on to teach Science and Reading at the Manchester Middle. He transferred to the Danvers Public schools where he was a Guidance Counselor for many years until his retirement after 34 years of service.

He was a member of the Gloucester Elks, The Tyrian-Ashler-Acacia Lodge A.F. & A.M. He worked at his father's and brother's CJ Herdman Upholstery Shop delivering furniture and bidding jobs. Charlie put himself through college and started his family. One of his first jobs was peddling slush for Joe Popcorn he was known as the "Lemonade Man". He also enjoyed playing golf and was a member of many leagues. He will always remembered for his wonderful personality, sense of humor and was a great story teller.

Charlie is survived by his daughter, Nina C. Story and Dan McPherson, of Rockport; three sons, Dale R. Herdman and wife, Heidi, of Salem, Steven J. Herdman and wife, Shari, of Rowley, and Dean L. Herdman of Fellsmere, FL. His sister Katherine Spinney of Durham, NC, His eight cherished grandchildren, Andy, Greg, Tim and Alison Story, Heather and Holly Herdman, Brian and Mark Herdman; seven precious great-grandchildren, Derek and Melanie Story and Abigail Story, Avery and Callie Herdman, Connor and Jack Herdman. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was predeceased by his two brothers James and George Herdman.

Charlie's visiting hours will be in the Pike-Newhall Funeral Home, 61 Middle St. Gloucester on Friday, June 30, 2017 from 4-7 PM. There will be a Masonic Service Friday at 6:30 PM. His Memorial Service will be in Trinity Congregational Church, 70 Middle St. Gloucester on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Beechbrook Cemetery, Gloucester.
