Obituary

Mr. Bruce C. Carter, 68, of So. Hamilton passed away on Monday January 30, 2017 in Blueberry Hill Nursing Center following a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Deborah J. (Casteline) Carter with whom he shared 26 years of marriage.

Bruce was born October 1, 1948 to the late J. Philip and Helen Carter. A Beverly farms native, he graduated from Beverly High School and Massachusetts Maritime Academy. As a merchant marine, Bruce often travelled to South America and Antarctica. He was a crew member of the Antarctic research ships the R/V Hero and the R/V Polar Duke. He also worked for ITT Antarctic Services in Paramus, NJ which maintained and supplied Palmer Station in Antarctica.

In 1991, he returned to Beverly Farms to focus on his family, where he briefly held the position of superintendent for the West Beach Corporation. He went on to work for Johnny Appleseed's in Beverly until 2011 when the company moved to Pennsylvania, at which time he retired.

Friends describe him as friendly and easy to talk to. He loved maritime, history and Boston's north shore. He was a Boston sports fan, and regularly watched the Bruins, Red Sox and patriots.

In addition to his loving wife Deborah, Bruce is survived by his children Melissa A. Smith and her husband Jonathan of Danvers, Katherine E. Hickey and her husband Beau of Port St. Lucie, FL and Philip E. Carter of Beverly. His four devoted grandchildren Benjamin and Lauren Smith, Noah and Julian Hickey. His sister in law Elizabeth J. O'Byrne and her husband Thomas of NJ and his brother in law Edward J. Casteline of NJ. He is the uncle of Kara Stearns, Brenan Stearns, Kevin O'Byrne and Christopher O'Byrne. Bruce is also survived by his Bassett Hound companion Jack.

He was predeceased by his sister Janice Stearns.

In honoring with Bruce's wishes Funeral Services will be private. There will be a private burial in Beechbrook Cemetery, Gloucester.
