Obituary for Barbara J. (Murray) Grover

November 1, 1936 - January 26, 2018
Rockport, Massachusetts | Age 81

Mrs. Barbara J. (Murray) Grover, 81, of Rockport passed away on Friday, January 26, 2018 after a brief illness. She was at home surrounded by her loving family. Barbara married the love of her life, Ronald E. "Bump" Grover Sr. with whom she shared 47 years of marriage. They remained inseparable until his death in 2004.

Barbara was born November 1, 1936 in Gloucester. She is the daughter of the late William C. and Evelyn M. (White) Murray. She was a graduate of Gloucester High School Class of 1954 (3rd row lunch table club). Although Barbara was born and raised in Gloucester she considered Pigeon Cove/Rockport her true home. She often joked that while she was "not an original Rockporter she gave birth to one"

She worked as a Secretary at LePages for a few years after her graduation until she decided to do the most important job of being a mom and a home maker. After her children were grown she returned to the work force in her chosen field and was employed by John & Peggy Coonley. She enjoyed the view of her son pulling his traps from her office window (most of the time). She decided to retire so that she could spend some quality time with her husband who was ill and care for her grandchildren – she loved to hold those babies!

Barbara was a warm, kind, and loving wife, mom, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and Bump enjoyed attending all the kid's events and games. Nan made everyone feel special. It was well known if you went to Nan's on a Friday night, you were getting fried haddock or her famous fish chowda. She treasured the time she spent with her family. Christmas time was a very special time for the Grover's. The house at 5 Green St was decorated like a star from heaven. It was not uncommon to see 200+ people visit over the holiday season. Barbara enjoyed making her family her top priority. She was called Nan not only by her family but by everyone who was blessed to have loved and known her. She and Bump took pleasure in riding around Cape Ann and getting a bite to eat at the Cupboard. Barbara enjoyed sports, especially the Patriots and the Red Sox. Nan always put everyone before herself. She had a special knack for remembering numbers and never forgot a birthday, anniversary and even a license plate. She often mentioned this trait had come from her Dad. Barbara was only 25 years old when she lost her Dad and that was one of the aches she had that never went away. After her father's passing, Barbara & Ronnie, without hesitation, welcomed Barbara's Mom into their loving home. Barbara was truly a special soul and will be missed by all that loved and knew her.

She is survived by her son Ronald E. Grover, Jr. and his wife Kimberly of Rockport, her daughters Carolyn M. Tarbox and her companion Daniel Frost of Rockport and Bonnie J. Maciel and her husband Kenneth of West Gloucester. She is also survived by her beloved brother Dexter Murray and his wife Marion of West Gloucester, her brother-in-law William Grover and wife Marilyn of Minnesota, her grandchildren Shannon Grover companion of Chris Johnson, Ronald Grover III companion of Amanda Quince, Brianna Grover, Dana Tarbox, Jr. and his wife Shay Tarbox, Nicole Tarbox companion of Stephen Mione, Michael Tarbox, Jessica Frost, Branden Maciel companion of Jessica Serrin and Daniel Maciel. As well, she is survived by her 19 great grandchildren, her son-in-law Dana Tarbox, Sr. of Gloucester, special niece Mona Benvie of Wenham as well as many nieces and nephews and cousins.

In addition to her loving husband Ronald and her parents, Barbara is predeceased by her beloved 3 older brothers and sister-in-laws, Martin J. "Bud" Murray and his wife Doris, Ralph Murray and his wife Margaret and William C. Murray, Jr. and his wife Harriett. Barbara was also pre-deceased by her special cousin Geneva Anderson, special niece, Lynn Grover and several brother/sister in-laws. No loss was harder on Barbara than the loss of her grand-daughter Ashley Grover. A piece of her soul went to heaven on that day.
